On August 11th we released our bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) program where anyone can use Republic Wireless simply by inserting a SIM card into an approved device. This is an incredible milestone for us and we’re happy to see so many customers joining this way. We also announced Republic 3.0 compatibility for Android™ 7.0 Nougat. ( Please note that you’ll need to check with your respective device manufacturer to see if and when Nougat will be available.)
We’ve also started to collect call quality feedback directly from you, our users. This is an important piece of our mission to continuously improve your experience. You can opt-in to provide us with feedback directly from the 3.0 Republic App. More details on that can be found here.
Behind the scenes, we’ve been working on clearing out some lingering bugs and shifting focus to the next big steps for us. We’re working a few customer-facing projects like the multi-device experience and Republic 3.0 on a CDMA carrier that you’ll want to keep on your radar. We detailed these a bit in our last product recap so we won’t go into much more detail here other than we’re making progress and stay tuned!
Last and changing gears a bit we wanted to share some data. We saw an article recently comparing how big carriers utilized WiFi. They generally do a good job but we do way, way, way better.
Our customers consistently offload around 94% of total data to WiFi. That’s amazing considering the next best carrier is around 75%.
Kudos to all our WiFi warriors, especially the folks on our Talk & Text plans!
The article also compared the apps that consume the most data on WiFi and Cellular respectively. The big carriers appear dominated by YouTube and Facebook with generally over 50% of data on either WiFi or cellular being used by these two apps. We see a similar phenomenon though the impact is muted as you can see in the below chart. We spanned this over 8 months so you can see the movement of various apps up or down in relative percentages. For the most part, things are fairly consistent and stable. We did see a Pokemon appear in July but it quickly got captured or run over or something. Regardless it’s gone now.
