How to insert the SIM card
Instructions can be found in the activation wizard at: [Activate | Republic Wireless] (https://republicwireless.com/activate/)
Alternatively, your phone should have arrived with a small booklet titled “moto e5 play read me”. This booklet shows you how to install the battery and the SIM. You need both the battery and SIM installed. The instructions also show how to install a microSD card. This can add more storage to your phone but is not required for operation.
Note: The Moto E5 Play has a removable battery and is shipped with the battery in the box but not installed. Please be sure you install the battery as the phone will not work otherwise.
Why You Need a Google Account and How To Get One
Just like Windows comes from Microsoft, Android comes from Google. Your phone needs a Google account for many of the functions people want from their smartphone. Here are just some of the things a Google account helps you do:
- Install new apps and get app updates for your phone from the safest site for Android phones
- Backup and restore your contacts, appointments and photos
- Access Email (Gmail), text documents, spreadsheets
The Republic Wireless app and updates come from the Google Play store. A Google account is needed to access the store and keep the Republic Wireless app up-to-date.
How to Create a Google Account:
If you want to create a Google Account using a computer, you can do that at the following link:
Some people choose to use a computer to create the account so they can use a keyboard. You can also choose to create the account using the phone, during activation. No matter which way you choose, be sure to keep track of the address and password. These can become critical in some situations so, please, don’t lose them.
How to update the Android Build
This phone left the Manufacturer’s warehouse with Android 8.0.0 installed on it. Since its manufacture date, there may have been some updates to that software. Check for updates by following these steps:
- Be sure your phone is connected via WiFi
- Open the Settings app
- Select “System updates”
You will see the screen change to “Checking for updates”. If your phone is up-to-date, you will see a new screen with “Your device is up-to-date”. Otherwise, you will see your phone download software and give you the option to install it now or later.

How to Turn on the Phone
Powering on, off, and waking the phone
To turn the phone on, press and hold the power button for 3-4 seconds. You should see a screen with “Moto” on it followed by some animation.
To turn the phone off, press and hold the power button. You should see a pop-up menu with “Power off” and “Restart” listed as options. Tap “Power Off” to turn the phone off.
To put the phone to sleep, tap and release the power button. This puts the phone to sleep if it is awake and wakes it up if it’s asleep.
The difference between off and asleep
The difference between the phone being off and the phone being asleep is as follows:
- Sleep is a power saving state, the phone is still on.
- You can receive phone calls and text messages while the phone is asleep.
- Waking from sleep is nearly instant.
- The screen is dark to save battery power
- When the phone is off none of its electrical components are running.
- Battery will drain at a negligible rate.
- Cannot receive phone calls or text messages.
- Slow to boot.
- The screen is off because the phone is off.
Locking and unlocking the phone
If you want to prevent other people from being able to access your phone without your permission, you can lock your phone with a password, PIN or pattern. Also, some apps, especially apps such as banking and payment apps, require that your phone be secured with a PIN, password, or pattern.
You choose these using the Settings app on the phone. Open the Settings app, select “Security & location”, then “Screen lock”.
What happens if you forget your PIN, Password, or Pattern
If you forget your PIN, password, or pattern, you will need to factory reset your phone to get the phone back to its state when it was new, deleting all your personal content. You will also need to add the same Google / Gmail account that was on the phone previously. If you can’t do this, this will trip a feature called the “Kill switch” and it will render the phone permanently inoperable. This is why it is so important to keep track of the login and password for your Google account.
