Block calls from unidentified callers

1. The phone-app setting “Block calls from unidentified callers” – does this block calls from persons not in your Contacts? “Unidentified callers” is unclear.
2. And does this mean that their call goes nowhere, or does it go straight to voicemail?

What I would like is to have such calls (from people not in my Contacts) go straight to voice mail, without making my phone ring. Is that what this setting does?

No, (If we’re talking about the Google dialer app). Per the below Google link, it "will block calls from private or unidentified numbers. You will still receive calls from phone numbers that are not stored in your contacts. "

I no longer have a Motorola phone but it is possible to do this on my Samsung in the Do Not Disturb settings. These instructions might get you there: Follow these instructions to limit all incoming calls to people on your Contacts list: Navigate to Settings -> Do Not Disturb. Toggle Manual ON (green slider) to enable Do Not Disturb (DND), or schedule a time for DND to automatically switch on. Tap Allow Calls From. Select All Contacts.
