Can an older phone be reset and used on a different network?

I have an older RW phone (Motorola, not sure of the model, but it was one of the cheaper ones). I’d like to give it to a friend who wants to use it temporarily with a phone card (i.e. tracfone, etc.) Will this phone work for that purpose, or is it locked into the RW network?

Phones sold since July 2016 are factory unlocked and can be used with any carrier that will accept them. Phones from before then (The Moto Defy, X1, X2, G1, G3, E1 or E2) can’t be used with any other network because of the custom OS that makes it compatible with only Republic.

Thanks, good to know. What RW plans would be available for one of these phones? Are any of the older plans still an option?

These phones activate on the Republic Refund Plans. (What Are Republic Refund (2.0) Plans? – Republic Help)
