Compass, magnetomter

I’m looking to upgrade my phone, and I’m a little confused about the sensor listings. I want a phone that will orient a map from a standing position for pedestrian navigation. The Moto G5 Plus lists a compass. Will that do the trick? I ask because the Moto Z Play lists a magnetometer. I gather they are the same thing, but I want to be sure the G5 Plus orients for pedestrian navigation.

Hi @dudleyrose,

The terms are indeed used interchangeably, though they’re not really the same thing. A magnetometer is the sensor used to implement compass functionality in a smartphone. I suppose many folks wouldn’t recognize what a magnetometer does, so why not just say the phone has a compass, though it’s technically incorrect.

Bottom line, the G5+ will do what you want.

Excellent. Thanks.
