Email to SMS Content Length > 32?

Up until the beginning of this month, I have been receiving emails as SMS messages without issue. I know that some of the smaller POP services don’t work, but the larger ones to.

Suddenly, as of April 2, SMS from my alarm monitoring company stopped. I know that they are being sent, and they have provided records that the Republic email server is receiving and acknowledging them, but they never get to my phone.

Some further investigation on my part, since Republic seems unwilling to troubleshoot this, seems as if any message longer than 33 characters is dropped by their server.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I haven’t had this issue. I just sent myself a test of a 40 character email and it came through without issue.

Hi @bill_b ,

I’m sorry to read that our support team is not currently able to troubleshoot E-mail to SMS failures on an individual basis with you. We do have to prioritize issues based on their impact across the membership in combination with the individual nature of the failure you are seeing, in order to manage our resources properly. At this time, we are not seeing a large-scale report of issues with failures of E-mails greater than 32 characters in length to be delivered as SMS.

I just tested by sending a 70-character E-mail to my SMS address, failing to remove my signature, and the entire E-mail including much of the signature was delivered as text.

I then followed with a message of 210 characters and then 420 characters. Both messages were received, but the 420 character message was truncated.

So it doesn’t appear that message length would prevent delivery.

Some time ago (before I was a RW employee) I did some testing on some failures I was seeing and learned that any irregularity in the E-mail headers can prevent delivery. In the situation I tested, it was pointed out to me by the friend who was helping me test, that the sending server had permanent failure errors indicated when the server was evaluated by SPF Query Tool .

Hi, thank you for the response. I certainly understand judicious resource management and wouldn’t have thought I could be the only one affected by this odd behavior. In fact in my troubleshooting this, my wife’s phone (also RW, Moto G4+, Nougat, Android Messenger) isn’t even lucky enough to get the emails to SMS messages that mine does. None of the emails I have sent to both accounts reach her phone, only mine.

Furthermore, I did consider it to be a sending server issue, and I know that some servers I have tried - no messages make it, and it has been like that for a while. However, currently I have tried three different servers, including sending from GMail directly. With Gmail emails I get at most 25 characters, no more. For example:

1234567890123456789012345 -> yes

12345678901234567890123456 ->never

Also, if I even send the same content more than once, the second occurrence doesn’t reach the phone. Even with a short message like “test”. I could see that this might be something like a SPAM filter?

Very strange, and disappointing.

Do you use a signature or any other default text in Gmail?

Hi amitl. No, no signatures nor default text in any of the 3 originating email accounts.

I have tried using textra as my messaging app with the same results. So, they only constants I have left are the receiving RW server and its processing, my RW account, and my phone.

Since it used to work on my phone up until April 2nd, perhaps either some phone software update (that is only affecting me) or something about my RW account?

Although, I don’t use it often…just sent myself an Email to SMS of around 40 characters and it came through fine.

Have you tried clearing data for the RW app?

You will need to grant permissions again to the app.

In the case of your wife, does she have the feature turned on in the Republic App?

Hi louisdi, that was indeed the problem with her phone not receiving any email texts. Now hers behaves similarly to mine in that it receives limited length messages only.

I cleared the data for the app, re-granted permissions, and the problem persists.

Are all the tests originating from the same email account? If so, can you try an alternative email account? If using GMAIL can you set the email to “Plain Text Mode” before sending? If on the web interface you can do this by tapping the little arrow in the bottom right of the compose screen and selecting “Plain Text Mode”. Does either a different email account or PTM change anything?

I have used three different email accounts, using the same mail client and different mail clients: my time warner cable smtp mail account, Gmail, and Outlook.com. All tests were configured to use plain text. The results have been similar: spotty reception of messages less than 33 characters (from TW account) and less than 20-30 characters (from Gmail and Outlook). In all cases, longer messages originating from any account never arrive.

Also, sending the same message more than once or twice within a minute or so seemed to trigger some kind of spam filter where another message with the same content wouldn’t arrive, but if the content was changed it would then arrive.

Hi @bill_b,

May I DM you my number? I’d like you to send me the same tests.

Thank you for your assistance so far, Southpaw. Here are my test data and results:

I sent 21 total messages, sent from 3 separate email servers using a combination of 3 clients. Each message was sent simultaneously to both your phone and mine.

Hi @bill_b,

I spoke to some of our technicians about our testing and they have confirmed that you and I are on different servers. They’re going to re-open your support ticket to take another look at the entire situation and see what they can do to address the issues you are experiencing.

Thanks for taking the time to troubleshoot this in Community.

It’s now nearly 3 months into it and republic still does not have a fix for this issue. How is that possible???

Why do you think the issue is not resolved? This is a single report by a single user and then it was shown that a number of other people were able to do exactly what the OP wasn’t able to. Are you experiencing the same issue?
