Before Installing an Update

  • Make sure your phone is not rooted.
Operating system updates are designed to work with the phone’s original software. If your device is rooted or modified, we can’t guarantee that the update will work properly or be able to predict its effect on your Republic device. See Rooting and User Modification for more info.

  • Clear your phone’s cache.
Clearing your cache ensures your device is at its peak operating state by clearing out any temporary or residual “junk” files from the device. See Clearing the Cache for instructions.
Note: The Google Pixel and Pixel XL do not have the option to clear the cache partition.

  • Charge your phone.
Plug your phone in to charge, or make sure your battery is at least 50% charged before installing system updates. See Charge My Phone for more info.

  • Connect to a WiFi network.
Your phone must be connected to WiFi to install system updates.

  • Check the amount of available space on your phone.
Your phone will need enough space to download and install the update. The amount of space needed for a system update varies, but will be listed in the release notes before you download the update.

To check the available space on your phone:

  1. Go to Apps.

  2. Tap Settings.

  3. Tap Storage.
