How Do I Transfer Text Messages & Call Log to New Moto X4

#1

I just received my new Moto X4 & would like to know the best way to transfer text messages & call log. Also do I put the RW sim in the phone before activating it? I have a google account so photos & contacts should automatically transfer when I sign in to google account during activation (I hope).
I just need to know how to transfer messages. Old Moto G3 is still active right now. Wish I was more Savvy with tech stuff.

Hi @lweetz

If you purchased the X4 from Republic, it came with the needed SIM card. If you acquired the X4 from any other source, you will not be able to reuse the SIM card from the G3. That phone uses a CDMA SIM and it cannot be moved to any other phone.

You will need a BYOP SIM which you can find at the following link:

https://republicwireless.com/shop/bring-your-own-phone/sim-card/

Please be aware that this SIM may have different coverage than you are used to. BYOP SIMs are GSM. You can read more about this at the following link:

The RW sim card actually came with the new moto X4 phone I ordered from Amazon but is not installed, I was kinda surprised. Just need to figure out the best, easiest way to transfer messages. I use Anywhere but would like all my messages, not just the last 30 days.

This app:

SMS Backup & Restore

SMS Backup & Restore is a simple Android app that backs up and restores your phone’s text messages and call logs. Note: This app can only restore call logs and messages that were backed up by it before they were deleted. Advanced messaging is not supported. For questions or issues please visit our FAQ at: http://synctech.com.au/sms-faqs/ APP FEATURES: - Backup SMS (text) messages, MMS and call logs in XML format. - Local device backup with options to automatically upload to Google Drive, Dro…

You should use the SIM that came with the phone.

You can use an app to backup your texts on your old phone. Then you can send the backup file to the new phone. You can do this as an email attachment. Install the same app on the new phone and “restore” the file from the old phone.

Here is a link to the app I use:

do I store them on my phone or google drive?

I find it easiest to backup the messages from the old phone to Google Drive, then restore from Google Drive to the new phone. You’ll need to install the app on both phones.

Thank you, I downloaded the SMS Backup & restore & Google Drive is an option to store them. Is this what I choose?

In a word, yes. Backup your messages from the old phone to Google Drive. Then, to get them on your new phone, install SMS Backup & Restore on your new phone and restore the messages from your Google Drive to the new phone.

ok, great… thank you… do I install the RW sim before I start the activation on the new phone?

Yes, your new phone will not activate without a SIM. I suggest following Republic’s walkthrough on a computer or tablet while activating the phone. You’ll find it here: Activate | Republic Wireless.

FYI – we just upgraded both of our Moto G1’s to Moto 6’s. Transferred the call logs and text messages using the “Transfer” function that’s also included in SMS Backup & Restore. No messing with backup then restore…transfer made it pretty much automatic. Both G1 phones were operational and we had access to a fast home network. YMMV

The transfer sounds easier. Will this give me an option to transfer what I want from the old phone?

Ok, Feeling pretty overwhelmed with this transfer. I think I got the messages & call log, but not all my photos & videos transferred over on google photos… I really got used to gallery & I sure wish the moto X4 had it. So now I have to figure out how to get all my photos & videos transferred. Should the ones on the SD card transfer? On the moto G3 it has gallery & google photos, Not all the photos in the gallery are in photos on the same phone, is that because of the SD card? Are there any apps like gallery I could upload on the phone? feeling pretty stupid & fustrated…

In Photos… you have the option to add additional folders to sync to Google.

Go to Settings -> Device Folders
to revise which ones are synced to google. The ones not synced to Google will have an icon
of “cloud with a line through it” which indicates that folder is not synced to the Google (cloud).

Hi @lweetz,

Motorola has replaced its Gallery app on newer phones with Google Photos. There are third party Gallery apps available on Google’s Play Store, however, having never used them I’m unable to suggest one. In any event, a Gallery app wouldn’t move photos from the G3 to the X4.

@amitl has provided solid guidance for adding folders not currently synced with Google Photos. You may also move the SD card itself from your G3 to the X4 thus moving any photos stored on the SD card.

Hang in, you’ll get there!

After hours of research that did not tell me anything. And speaking to several specialist which advised me to transfer all the photo albums to computer then download to new phone, I finally figured it out… whew! The albums I created on the Moto G3 with gallery were also in google photos only on the Moto G3 & would not transfer to the new moto X4 or computer. I finally clicked on one of the albums & at the top was Backup & Sync and next to it, a toggle that was off. Soon as I switched the toggle, ShaZam! the album started downloading to Google photos. I knew there had to be a way… Feeling relieved now…
