How does upgrading an existing CDMA device to a BYOP device works?

I currently have a Moto X Pure, purchased from Republic Wireless, setup for CDMA when purchased.

If I upgrade this phone to an approved CDMA BYOP device, how does that process work? Can I just move the SIM card over to the new device? Or will I need something special from Republic to make it work properly?

active CDMA cards can not be swapped (and to add complexity there are multiple types of CDMA SIM cards)
the recommend procedure is to open a ticket and provide the IMEI number of the phone plus 3 address where the phone will be used and support will send a CDMA SIM card for that phone.
