Issue Description

I did a phone check and it came up with these issues:
WiFi Co-Channel: WARN: 2437 MHz @ -55 dBm: 6 interfering and 0 non-interfering on the same frequency

WiFi Cross-Channel: WARN: 2437 MHz @ -55 dBm: 2 overlapping and 8 non-overlapping

Here is the entire analysis. Not sure how to fix it. I do have 3 signal boosters, used mainly as a connection for desktops. Also have a VPN. Any help would be great, thanks.

Let me take a stab at this with you, I will address each of the warnings sperately

  • The 2.4 Ghz band and channel you were set to is indicated in the feedback verbiage that was provided

  • My guess from the number of channels in use that the diagnostic detected, you may live in an apartment, condo or other very tight neighborhood

  • Possible fix’s

    • The diags indicate that you could probably shift to the 5 Ghz band where there are more channels available, and usually less users
    • Look at the signal your phone is seeing using a 3rd party app and pick a different channel on your 2.4 Ghz band, (this has the advantage of better penetration through walls etc)
  • Help in finding help for this is documented in a Tips & Tricks where many other user provided Help docs have a permanent home

ETA: Perhaps if you would grab a screenshot of the Warning that was posted by the Diagnostic, then others as well as myself will be better able to assist you?

Thanks for the quick reply. I live in a single family home on a cul-de-sac. I am guessing that I g o into the router (Comcast) the make the changes, right?

I have no experience with Comcast, but I would doubt they would be much help.

  • Take a look at your router, and post back its name/model nr/version (all usually on a label on the back or bottom) Given that information one of us one the forum can help you through any changes.
  • They may have included two different Network Names one for each freq band?

My router is one from comcast (I did not want to play the ‘its the router’s fault’ so I have leased it. Turns out that the comcast router won’t let you change it, it automatically finds the most efficient/faster config. Unfortunately if neighbors have the same, they are resolving to the same channel. I can either switch to ATT (no way) or, frequently reboot in the hopes it selects a better channel, or buy my own equipment.

If you told me which particular router you have, then I can try to find its manual, and if you can’t make changes, then perhaps I could better advise you on what to ask Comcast to change.
If it is set on Auto, then it probably will find a different channel when it powers back up … but I doubt it would be channel 6,
I would do the following if I were having the problem

  • Reboot the router, then reconnect
  • Then run the RW Diags and look to see if the results are different (or scroll down through the doc to where you see the WiFi Frequency and channel info … is it the same or different?

Just out of curiosity, was there a specific issue you are trying to solve, or did you just run the diagnostics to see what they would say?

This all started because I am having issues with the phones, specifically long load times, times where it just freezes, google will abort. There are also apps that, since a couple of weeks ago, take over a minute to load, like Pandora. What is weird is that not all do that. For example, CNBC app loads as normal but Fox Business app takes about a minute (never did before) but the Fox business website pops up on the phone without problems. Some apps, like accuradio, just spins and never does load. I am not a big app user at all and I run ccleaner to try to recover space, remove seldom used apps, hibernate apps, etc. but nothing has an effect. It just seems to be my phone too. Very frustrating.

I did the reboot and it is a different outcome of FAILS. Not sure if the mean anything though.

  • It appears that the phone grabbed a 5 Ghz channel, but from the verbiage it may have been before the WiFi was completely up because of the following entries (my interpretation, and I am not an RW Engineer nor have I ever played one on TV)

Here is what I would suggest as the next step.

  1. Power off the phone
  2. Reboot the router, and while your at it please let me know what the router is, it might help me help you
  3. Once the router is totally up, then power your phone back on and reconnect
  4. Run the diagnostics again

My end game, is to get enough information from you, so that I can make a solid recommendations

Here is the latest log after following your instructions. Plus a screen shot showing the Warning and Failure summary. I also unplugged the 3 range extenders I have in the house so I am pretty confident that nothing from my house is causing the overlap.

Hope this helps. The channel is different once again but still the same issue. I am on a cul-de-sac with about 100 feet between the us and the neighbors and over 100 yards to the next houses.

while your at it please let me know what the router is, it might help me help you

  • Based on the results you have posted, your router is set to ‘Auto’, which will find what it thinks is a good channel. The band you connect to may be 2.4 or 5 Ghz depending on whats between your phone and the Router to block the signal.
  • The layout of your neighborhood (cul de sac) provides the maximum challenge, as each house face multiple other houses as well as having a house on each side. There will always be contention, which makes having the ability for you to choose which band you want your device to use.
  • I am afraid that I have helped dig you into a hole, and without knowing which router you actually have there is not much more that I can suggest

I was able to look up the user manual, and it appears from the label shown on Page 15 that there was originally two SSIDS (Network Name), 1 each for 2.4 & 5 Ghz, and these appear to be changeable by following direction on page 28-30. However some ISP’s modify & lock these down, and if changeable it may be only done by them.
At this time here is my suggestion

  1. Download and install from Google Play an analyser such as suggested in WiFi Help - Internet connectivity - COVID-19 and the current times
  2. Pick the least used channel 1/6/11 on 2.4 and manually set that
  3. Do the same for the 5 Ghz,
    Rules of thumb
    • if a neighbor is interfering with you, then you are probably be interfering with them
    • if you can’t find a clear channel, then find one where ‘their’ signal is lower by 20-25 dBm than yours … remember that these numbers are negative, so -75 is actually dBm actually 25 dBm lower than -50
  • you may find areas in your house that only 2.4 will work … but it’s going to take some experimenting on your part

I would like to add that devices in your home can interfere with your wi-fi. Printers and televisions will beacon on wi-fi, if enabled, and because of their proximity they will interfere strongly with your phone and laptop if they share a channel. Software updates can re-enable wi-fi beaconing. My Sony Bravia TV did that to me last year. A wi-fi analyzer on your phone will help find these sources.

if I have range extenders, will they cause issues? Even if I find these sources, what can be done? Cannot really turn off my TV, printer, ROKU, etc.

I get the same warnings as you when I run the Republic Wireless diagnostics. Other than the warnings in the diagnostics, I have no issues whatsoever. I don’t think the long load times in apps are related to the diagnostics. It looks to me like your phone may be getting low on free storage. You may also try disabling the VPN, if you haven’t already. For apps that are acting slow, you may also wish to clear the app cache:
