IRS Verification Fails

Hi, just needed to reverify my IRS account. One of the steps is to send a text to your cell phone. When I tried to my Republic phone, I kept on getting the error below and the IRS says it needs to use regular mail to finish the verification!

Republic number rejected for online SMS security verification

Republic Wireless by its hybrid/WiFi first service is considered a VOIP provider and is classified as landline. More and more verification services have been applying the stricter definition of mobile phones while using text message based verification.

There isn’t much that RW can do about this classification.

Hopefully, the alternative snail mail verification is satisfactory for your purposes.

In this case, it isn’t that Republic’s numbers are VoIP but rather that Republic is a prepaid mobile phone service.

Thank you.
