Moto X4 - Notification Sound for Text Messages only works if app is open

#1

What phone do you have?
Moto X4
What plan are you on?
My Choice 2GB
Does your plan include data, or just talk & text?
Includes Data

If I have my Text (Messages) app open it will give me a notification sound when a text arrives but if my phone is asleep or if I have another app opened instead, it just vibrates. I think some other apps are doing the same thing as well but haven’t been able to test them.

Hi @dougl.junmwk,

Could you tell us what text messaging app you’re using, and what your settings are for that app in the Android Settings > Notifications menu?

You might also review the Android Settings > Sound > Do not disturb settings for any possible clues.

Hi @southpaw.

Thanks for your reply.
I am using the Messages App that came with my phone.
The settings for that app are
“Notifications” are On
“Allow Notification Dot” is On
"Importance " is set to Urgent - make sound and pop on screen
“Sound” is Default Notification Sound
“Vibrate” is On
“Override Do Not Disturb” is On

In the Android Do Not Disturb settings:
under “Priority Only Allows”
“Reminders” is On
“Events” is on
“Messages” says None <-- Could this be it maybe???
“Calls” is From Contacts Only
“Repeat Callers” is set to Off

See anything that might be helpful? The only thing I’m unsure of is what the “Priority Only Allows” setting should be for Messages
Update: changing that didn’t fix the problem.

@TheDoctor and @southpaw,
It seems I just needed to restart my phone. I feel a little stupid for not trying that first.
It wasn’t until I tried going into safe mode unsuccessfully that I realized it was working again.

Thank you both for your help!
