I ran out of data and suddenly couldn’t send or receive texts. Didn’t know what to try.
You should be able to send and receive texts even when you run out of data. The exception would be if you disabled cellular data, or have run up against a data limit that you set for yourself in the Android settings. If you did either of those things, undo them and you should be able to send/receive texts again.
