Republic has recently introduced a new cellular data only offering. The announcement is here: New from Republic Wireless: A data-only SIM card. A companion blog is here: Republic Wireless Unlimited Data-Only SIM.
Republic is testing the waters a bit, nonetheless, there have been some questions raised regarding compatible devices. Unlike Republic’s mobile phone service, there is no blended WiFi/cell service and no Republic app management of same to be concerned with. This is cellular data for Internet access. This new SIM does not provide Republic phone service and the compatibility requirements for that do not apply.
What is required for compatibility with Republic’s new data only SIM is a GSM unlocked device that supports the following:
4G LTE: Bands 2 (1900 MHz), 4 (1700/2100 MHz), 12 (700 MHz), 66 (1700/2100 MHz) 71 (600 MHz)
3G: Bands 2 (1900 MHz), 4 (1700/2100 MHz)
Generally, one will find support for Bands 66 and 71 on certain newer phones only. Data only devices (depending upon age) generally support Bands 2, 4 and sometimes 12. For the best coverage experience, if purchasing a device for use with Republic’s data only SIM, you’ll want to be certain it supports, at least, Bands 2, 4 and 12.
The moral of the story, one will want to verify the specs of any data only device one is considering using with Republic’s data only SIM to be certain it will work as expected. One might also want to verify coverage here: Coverage Check | Republic Wireless.
