"this picture is broken'

I have a Moto X 2nd generation phone. Several times in the past 2 weeks when I have been texted a photo and I touch to enlarge I get a black screen with a white outlined drawing of a photo ripped apart and a 'frowny face" above it . Below this it is written ‘This picture is broken’. Why is this happening?

Which messaging app are you using? Are you invariably receiving these from the same correspondent?

Edit: Some Google research suggests this is a memory problem or a Gallery problem. Cures range from clearing the cache to making more space available through housekeeping.
