Traveling abroad - can't turn off cell signal - battery draining

Moto X 1st gen. I’m abroad and using WiFi calling. The phone keeps searching for a cell signal, which of course it won’t find. This drains the battery very rapidly. You can’t use Airplane Mode, because this turns off the WiFi as well. Of course if I’m on a WiFi connection that means I’m inside and can just keep the phone plugged in, but it’s an annoying issue. Any workarounds?

You should be able to turn on Airplane mode, then turn on WiFi. Airplane mode should remain enabled and WiFi should come on.

Thanks, that worked! Although occasionally I have seen a message that you have to turn Airplane Mode off in order to place a call. Not sure why, if I power cycle the phone I can usually get around it.
