We bought a smartphone without a data plan for my father who lives in a retirement community. He doesn’t have wifi. How will he get Google and Republic Wireless updates? He will only use the phone for calls/texts/pics/videos.
Your father will need data access (WiFi or cell) for app updates. Is getting to public WiFi an option? Might his retirement community offer WiFi in common areas? If not, you’ll want to look at purchasing cell data.
You could occasionally take his phone home for any updates

Most of the regular updates will have no/little effect on his phone’s performance. It’s good however to keep the system/RW app up to date. If he in unable to do so Jben’s suggestion of checking for updates on occasional visits would help.
