Upgrading to new phone/my choice plan questions about how it works

I think I want to upgrade from a legacy phone & plan (moto g 3rd gen) and I think I understand the steps but I want to make sure.

  1. I think I want to moto g6 but it’s cheaper in a store than ordering from this website, so I want to confirm I could buy in store and then buy the $5 sim from Republic Wireless?
  2. How will I know if I’m getting a gsm sim or cdma sim? My current phone uses CDMA because that’s all that existed with RW at the time but I think i’d prefer GSM just to make things more functional for wifi phone use if I’m traveling internationally. (home zip code 97218)
  3. I think I understand in general how to activate the new phone, but what exactly happens with the old phone? Is there something I do in the google play store to get all my apps put on the new phone? Will that stuff still be on my old phone too? My photos are backed up in the google cloud so will they be on my new phone too or only in the cloud? Will all my current texts disappear (stock messaging app)? Thanks, I never did this before.

  1. You can purchase a Moto G6 elsewhere and purchase a SIM from Republic Wireless.

Here are acceptable models:

"* Moto G6 (XT1925-6)1

1BYOP Motorola phones will need to be North American unlocked, and on software channel RETUS or AMZ to be compatible with both of our cellular providers. If they are not on one of those software channels, the phone may work with our GSM provider but not on our CDMA partner’s network. To find the software channel on your Motorola phone, please follow these steps."

Above quoted from this document:

  1. As a Bring Your Own Phone your SIM will be GSM. If the coverage isn’t working for you, you can request a CDMA SIM from Republic Wireless by opening a ticket:

Open a ticket

  1. Install the Republic Wireless app and it will guide you through activation. You can also use this tool to help you:

Sync stuff: On old phone under Google Account, check that all that you want synced is turned on.
If photos are synced to Google Photos then your photos will be on your new phone.

Texts, you will need to back them up yourself. You can use this app:

Install the app on both phones. Back up old phone to Drive, it’s on your phone already. Then open app on new phone and do a restore from Drive.
