VPN needed for phone on public WiFi?

Should cell phone users have a VPN to protect their phone when using public WiFi?
I don’t do banking or financial things on my phone, but I don’t want anyone hacking it if I’m in a public place.
If a VPN is advisable, does anyone have recommendations as to which one?

This will be a matter of person opinion in most cases. Here’s mine:

A VPN does not protect your phone from hacking. It protects the data your phone sends and receives. Therefore, adding a VPN to the phone won’t offer protection of the kind you’re describing. As you say you don’t do anything sensitive when on public wifi, there’s likely no reason for a VPN.
