When a service tries to send me a text or verify my phone number, it doesn't work

Whenever a service - a website, app, or whatever - asks to text me a code to verify my phone number, it never works. Including tonight when I’m trying to get my old forms from the IRS so I can do my taxes, and because they could not verify my phone number with my service provider, I have to wait 5 days for them to mail me a code! I mean, I guess I get what I pay for, but this is pretty bad.

I have the 2gig phone plan on a Moto G5 Plus, but have always had this problem on any Republic phone and plan.

What phone do you have?
What plan are you on?
Does your plan include data, or just talk & text?

As @louisdi pointed out last week, the IRS will not verify phones on prepaid accounts.

If you have a pay-as-you-go mobile phone or a business/family plan mobile phone not associated with your name, you may request that we mail an activation code to the address we have on file for you.

But I don’t have a prepaid account… I just have a regular Republic account…

Republic Wireless is a prepaid service.

Hmm, I didn’t know this. I’m glad i verified with the IRS when I was still on Project Fi. A week later and I would have had an issue with my Republic number.
